Common Types of Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can come in many forms. Any tooth pain needs urgent dental care. The pain is your oral nerves telling you there is a serious issue with the tooth, but not all dental emergencies are painful. A filling can fall out, or a dental implant may need repair. These may not hurt immediately, but they can jeopardize your dental and oral health, making them a top priority for repair.

Abscessed Tooth

An abscessed tooth is a painful infection. Bacteria infect the tooth, causing swelling and pain. It may require immediate dental care. We will treat the abscess and likely prescribe antibiotics to stop the infection and relieve pain.

Tooth Extraction

Severe decay and trauma to a tooth that is beyond repair will likely require an extraction. As time goes on and the damage is untreated, infection may set in and cause further problems. We provide gentle tooth extraction experience.

Tooth Filling

Sudden tooth pain may happen because a filling falls out, is knocked out, or dislodges because of a chip/break. This trauma exposes the nerve and causes sharp pain. An emergency filling can address this pain and potentially save the tooth.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

An exposed nerve can cause a great deal of pain. Likewise, sharp edges of the chipped/broken tooth may slice at your tongue and gums, making chewing painful. Avoid infection and find relief through emergency dental treatment.

Swollen Gums

Infection is typically the cause of your gums swelling and may be part of a more serious problem such as a dental abscess. We will treat the infection and realign your oral health.

Wisdom Teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause severe pain and damage adjacent molars, potentially leading to chipping and breaking. Infections may happen, too, if a wisdom tooth or molar that’s damaged from it becomes infected. Emergency treatment will involve removing the wisdom tooth.

Teeth Grinding

Grinding your teeth will wear down the enamel and potentially expose the dentin, which can cause pain and lead to an infection. An emergency solution can include dental guards to stop the grinding, followed by restorative treatments to repair the damaged teeth.

Emergency Dentistry Frequently Asked Questions

We provide fast emergency appointments. We schedule appointments for urgent needs, prioritizing those in severe pain. We’ll do our best to schedule a same-day appointment or we can often get you in next-day. Call us now. We will find a time that works.

Collect the tooth – if possible – and give it a gentle wash. Place the tooth in a saline solution (salt + water) and come into our office as soon as possible. We will try our best to save the tooth through advanced dentistry techniques and capabilities.
Yes, we have the expertise and knowledge to handle pain caused by infections, exposed nerves, chipped/broken teeth, gum disease, and other trauma. If an infection prevents us from immediately beginning treatment, we will treat it with antibiotics. If needed, we can refer you to an endodontist to perform a root canal to save a tooth. An extraction may be necessary if the tooth is too damaged.
During your emergency dental visit, we will perform an exam to properly diagnose the issue. We will then use our various treatment options to provide immediate pain relief. This may include fillings, extractions, or temporary solutions until we can get you back in to address the bigger problem. We will also provide guidance and aftercare instructions.
The costs for emergency dental treatment vary by the type of treatment needed. The only way to provide a fair and accurate quote for services is after the exam. We accept many insurance plans and also have financing options available.
